API Updates Standards
For Well Safety Valves
WASHINGTON-The American
Petroleum Institute has published the
21st edition of its Specification 6A,
Wellhead and Tree Equipment, for onand offshore well safety valves.
API says the updated publication
includes new automatic closure
requirements as well as requirements
for modern technologies, including
equipment quality provisions and
recognition of the environmental
conditions in which well equipment is
to be placed in service.
Technical updates in the 21st edition
have been authorized by its
Subcommittee on Valves & Wellhead
Equipment, API continues. Among key
changes, it says, are:
· A complete reorganization of the
document, including grouping quality
requirements by activity rather than
product service line;
· Revising all sizing tables and
associated figures;
· The addition of boarding
shutdown valves, as well as better
defining the casing and tubing hangers
product line for slip and mandrel
hangers, thereby effectively adding
three new products;
· Integrating tubing head adapter
requirements into overall head
requirements;
· Normative heat treatment
requirements;
· Adding pressure boundary
qualification requirements; and
· Targeting requirements for
specific products rather than product

Gas Storage Levels
Decrease By 88 Bcf
WASHINGTON-Underground
natural gas storage in the United States
stood at 3.055 trillion cubic feet on Nov.
23, 19.1 percent below the five year
average, according to the U.S. Energy
Information Administration. That was
643 Bcf less than a year ago, when gas
storage stood at 3.698 Tcf.
According to EIA, gas storage in the
East Region was 778 Bcf on Nov. 23,
12.9 percent below the five-year average
and 100 Bcf less than it was a year ago.
Gas storage in the Midwest Region
stood at 938 Bcf on Nov. 23, 12.3
percent below the five-year average and
133 Bcf less than a year ago.
In the Mountain Region, EIA says,
gas storage was 171 Bcf on Nov. 23,
20.8 percent below the five-year
average and 50 Bcf less than a year ago.
Gas storage in the Pacific Region
was 254 Bcf on Nov. 23, 26.8 percent
below the five-year average and down
60 Bcf from a year ago.
In the South-Central Region, gas
storage levels on Nov. 23 were 914 Bcf,
26.8 percent below the five-year average
and down 600 Bcf from a year ago. r
