THE 2007 SAFETY AND PHILANTHROPY REPORT DONOR SOCIETIES: THE AOPA AIR SAFETY ENDOWMENT FUND ERRAL LEA PLYMATE MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT The stars aligned for Erral and Glenn Plymate some 64 years ago. It was their “first sighting,” at a shake shop in Portland, Oregon. They were perfect partners in marriage, in raising their family, and in flying their airplanes. They instilled the love of flying into their children and the practice of safety in all they touched. While Glenn served as left-seater, Erral, who soloed with less than 11 hours of instruction, was his perfect flying partner. With their three children they traveled far and wide. Glenn’s career took the family from Oregon to California and even to the Kingdom of Jordan. When Erral passed away in 2003, Glenn and their children established a memorial endowment at the AOPA Air Safety Foundation. Creative and committed, Glenn challenged others to join him through a matching gift program. What was established with $2,500 in 2003 is rapidly becoming one of the AOPA Air Safety Foundation’s largest endowments with more than $400,000 to date. This year $50,000 has been added to the challenge fund. AOPA members and friends who contribute towards this $50,000 goal now will have their gifts doubled by Glenn. And to make your gifts really climb higher, the AOPA Air Safety Foundation will add another $50,000 for a 3-to-1 match. Bringing the endowment above $500,000 will generate a minimum of $30,000 annually for AOPA Air Safety Foundation programs. The Plymate family’s vision not only creates a perennial gift for the funding of the foundation’s mission, it ensures that Erral’s memory will continue to soar with fellow pilots for generations to come.
