THE 2007 SAFETY AND PHILANTHROPY REPORT DONOR SOCIETIES: AOPA HAT IN THE RING SOCIETY RICK SCHWARTZ, MEMBER Pilots say that flying “gets in their blood.” Rick Schwartz feels the same, and he’s got 2,800 hours in his logbook to prove it. But you could also say that Rick and his wife Jane have flying safety in their veins. That’s because taking and supporting regular GA training— including extensive use of AOPA Air Safety Foundation courses—is an integral part of their passion for aviation. “We feel like we’d be missing something important if we didn’t,” says Rick, a member of the AOPA Hat in the Ring Society since 1998. “The material they put out is phenomenal. The quality is years ahead of corporate America.” Rick says the U.S. Air Force embedded safety into his flight training at the Air Force Aero Club. Rick retired a lieutenant colonel following a 24-year career serving both on active duty and in the reserves. “We were required to attend safety meetings if we wanted to fly. That made me really cognizant of the need for ongoing training.” Rick is now president and CEO of WinWholesale, Inc., the third largest industrial wholesale distributor in the U.S. Today he and Jane fly a well-equipped Cessna T210. Jane, who nearly completed flight training before they started a family, “is a skillful co-pilot.” To them, supporting the AOPA Air Safety Foundation is a just a natural part of flying as well as a solid investment in the future of GA. 19
