AOPA 2007 Safety and Philanthropy Report - (Page 6) DONOR SOCIETIES: AOPA’S TOP PHILANTHROPISTS HAL SHEVERS General aviation pilots may think of Hal Shevers as the founder and chairman of Sporty’s, the world’s leading pilot supply company. But Hal also is a leader in GA safety education and a partner with AOPA and supporter of the AOPA Air Safety Foundation for more than 40 years. One of our special ATPs (AOPA’s Top Philanthropists), Hal and The Sporty’s Foundation generously support the passion of GA. “I have always thought of Sporty’s as an educational institution,” says Shevers, who has logged more than 12,000 hours since he first soloed in a J–3 Cub in 1957 and has been a CFII since 1961 and an ATP since 1966. “We educate pilots to be safe and proficient.” Sporty’s began with Hal selling aviation radio receivers from the trunk of his car in 1961 as a flight instructor. Soon after he developed the first three-day instrument rating written test prep course and began teaching it for AOPA in 1966. Today, Sporty’s sells hundreds of pilot products and produces educational DVDs. At its home base at Clermont County/Sporty’s Airport, the company is involved in every segment of light aircraft, from training to maintenance to aircraft sales. Hal was inducted into the National Association of Flight Instructors Hall of Fame in 2007. After more than 50 years in the cockpit, he still relishes passing on the love of flying and respect for safety. “Being a pilot and flight instructor has provided a rewarding career and an exciting life for me.
