Ray has been driven by a sense of purpose and mission in military service, in business and in nearly 70 years as a pilot. It began on December 7, 1941, when he witnessed the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor and continued throughout World War II as a B-17 captain. Among many missions, he flew in the raids on the Schweinfurt ball-bearing plants and was lead pilot on a D-Day attack on German headquarters in Normandy. After the war James flew his Cessna 170B on business and personal trips to 58 countries and to every Caribbean island with a landing strip. He’s also flown extensively in North America as a rancher, oil and gas explorer, and real estate developer, logging 3,500 hours in single-pilot Citations over 29 years. James has been a seed investor for more than 300 startups including Eclipse Aviation and Cirrus Design and is a GA philanthropist who has contributed $8 million to the University of North Dakota’s aerospace and business programs. He’s also been an AOPA member for more then 57 years and is one of the prestigious ATPs, or AOPA Top Philanthropists. For all his accomplishments, he retains a humility born of experience. “What I learned in business also applies to safe flying: Don’t be greedy, and just when you think you’re a genius, you aren’t,” he says. “Most accidents are the result of a lack of understanding and making poor calls.” His lifelong sense of purpose and mission also underlies his strong support of the AOPA Air Safety Foundation. “You can’t teach judgment 101,” he says. “But the AOPA Air Safety Foundation has done a great job of helping pilots develop good judgment for themselves.” 8
