weather briefing wasn't on record as it was
not obtained through a flight service station,
DUAT, or DUATS. The NTSB speculated that
the pilot used aviationweather.gov (ADDS)-a
wonderful website for aviation weather,
but unless you request all of the relevant
information, individually, you may miss
something important. What are the chances
that the accident pilot reviewed pireps for the
route of flight? Do you always look for pireps?
Do you teach your students to look for them?
As for the airmet that had been issued, several
ASI staff pilots debated whether it would
raise a red flag in preflight planning: airmets
are issued over such large areas, and so often,
that perhaps there is a tendency to tune out or
discredit the severity of one. Even if this pilot
saw the airmets, how much weight might have
been given in deciding whether to take off? If,
instead, the pilot had seen 92 pireps with severe
and extreme turbulence, one can only speculate
a decision would have been made to postpone or
cancel the flight.
I'd like to make the case that CFIs should teach
their students to obtain weather from two
sources. First, call a flight service specialist,
who is trained to give briefings, including all
of the relevant weather as well as notams for
the route of flight. The call will be recorded so
that if, heaven forbid, you or your student have
to prove to the FAA or someone else that you
did in fact obtain a weather briefing before the
flight, you can do that relatively easily. Also,
there's something to be said for hearing a live
briefing in addition to reading one-you're much
less likely to miss a crucial piece of information
when you're being presented the information in
two different formats. Then have your student
use their favorite app or website to get a visual
and/or textual description of the weather.
As I'm a mom-and by default always look for
ways to multi-task and best utilize my time-I
call flight service in the morning while waiting
for my car to warm up, then I take a look at my
smartphone when I get to the airport. I feel better
knowing that I've covered all my bases and my
behind at the same time.
So along with making sure you teach your students
how to read and interpret weather, teach them
all the different ways to get the weather and the
benefits of each. You never know how the advice
you give them now will pay off in the future.
