"Human Factors" have been cited as the causal factor
in the majority of aircraft accidents over the years.
The concept of crew resource management (CRM)
was developed as a result of a NTSB study of airline
accidents in the 1970s. Since that time, the idea that
pilots can make better decisions-and in turn have
fewer accidents-if they use all of the resources
available to them has migrated to all areas of aviation,
including general aviation and primary flight training.

The training programs at most airlines break
training into two concentrations: maneuver based
training and Line-Oriented Flight Training (LOFT).
Maneuver based training has pilots learn and
practice maneuvering the aircraft during various
flight stages, such as stall recognition and recovery,
steep turns, and go around procedures. General
aviation flight instructors spend the majority of time
with primary students on maneuver based training.
It takes a lot of practice and repetition for student
pilots to learn how to fly straight and level, make
steep turns while maintaining altitude ±100 feet,
and get the proper flare in landing.
The LOFT section of training is where the emphasis
shifts to teaching good CRM skills. The instructors

know that the pilots can perform steep
turns to standards and a proper go around.
Now, the instructors build scenarios to
teach decision making, which will lead to
the flight's safe outcome. These scenarios
start before the crew takes their positions
in the aircraft. It begins with getting the
weather, calculating the proper fuel load,
working weight and balance, and loading
passengers. Everything is done in the order
that it would be on an actual line flight
with passengers, and realistic challenges
are thrown into the mix that test the pilot's
decision making abilities.
