it to spin around ever so slowly, and I was a pro
at having it hug the ceiling with all four motors
running at full speed. Landing was automatic.
Okay, I pushed the landing button and the drone
did all the work. A couple more flights with
decreasing levels of coordination convinced me
to get back to my regularly assigned duties and
wait to practice at home.
Thankfully there was very little exposure to bodily harm (that inflicted by my wife excepted)
and the repairs should be a lot cheaper than replacing an engine in a Cessna 152 or 172. Once
it's repaired, I'll do a lot more practice before actually getting those pictures of Scouters going
through training. And that cool video shot from the camp's dining hall down to Gilwell Field
may have to wait until the second weekend of the course.
I had watched YouTube videos on how to fly the
drone, so I excitedly set it up in our front yard (I
live outside my home airport's Class D airspace)
and got ready to fly. Much to my despair-and
my wife and children's delight-I still had a lot to
learn. A hard landing resulted in one of the engines
coming undone from the mount, so I purchased
another engine after consulting with my UAS
guru, who assured me "we all crash." Thanks, Kat!
(Nothing was harmed in the making of this article, except some lawn, a drone and maybe, my
dignity....)
In the meantime, I am enjoying learning another facet of general aviation. I sumbitted my
8710-13 on August 29, 2016, and have joined the ranks of remote sUAS pilots.

his flight instructor certificate in 1996 and enjoys seeing students light up when they put it all
together and nail a maneuver.
