NOW, IN FLIGHT TRAINING THE FINAL "E" IS EVALUATION INSTEAD OF ENABLE,
BUT THE RESULT IS THE SAME: WE'RE GIVING FEEDBACK (A PRECIOUS GIFT) TO
OUR STUDENTS ON THEIR PERFORMANCE AND IF WE'RE DOING IT RIGHT IT'S
DEFINITELY NOT A ONE-SIDED CONVERSATION.
I ALWAYS GET A KICK WHEN VARIOUS
INTERESTS OF MINE INTERSECT. A CASE IN
POINT OCCURRED THIS PAST WEEKEND.
As you may have gathered from my Chief's Corner
article in the previous issue, I'm actively involved in
Scouting. You might say it's a passion of mine, even
though I only got as far as Wolf rank in Cub Scouts.
There's nothing like opening young minds to the
possibilities and experiences the outdoors offers boys
and girls. I enjoy seeing them work to solve problems
and expand their envelope. To that end I am serving on a youth leadership training
course next summer in my local Scout Council, and we had our first adult staff
member meeting on Saturday. My role is to guide and mentor the Scouts who will
present much of the training to the youth taking the course. One of the things we'll
be working on all that week is introducing them to the Training and Leading EDGE
models. In Scouting we use the Training EDGE method to teach Scouts new skills,
and as they get more comfortable with teaching their peers they transition to leading
them using the same principles.
EDGE stands for explain, demonstrate, guide, and enable and is used in a very specific
way to impart knowledge. As an example, a Scout who is using the Training EDGE
method to teach his fellow Scouts how to tie a taut-line hitch will begin by explaining
why they need to learn it and when they will use that particular knot: "This is an
important knot, not just because you need to know it to pass your Scout rank, but
because this knot allows you to loosen or tighten the ropes on your tent or tarp so it
stays nice and tight and doesn't leak any rain." (Or maybe a few years down the road,
tie down your airplane on the ramp-see what I did there?)
