THERE ARE MANY GENERAL AVIATION ACCIDENTS
THAT ILLUSTRATE WHAT CAN HAPPEN WHEN
PILOTS FLY IN AIRCRAFT OR CONDITIONS in

which they have little to no experience. But what
happens when the inexperienced person on
board is the flight instructor? Whether giving a
flight review, transition training, or instruction
in a new type of operation, you will likely at some
point be flying with a client who is more familiar
with the equipment or operation than you are.
Be honest with yourself, and your client, about
your capabilities. When a CFI chooses to instruct
despite a lack of familiarity or experience, the
results can be disastrous.
In February 2008, after completing a flight review
in a Cirrus SR22, a private pilot and CFI were
returning to the airport in Lindsay, Oklahoma.

While descending as they turned from base to
final at a high bank angle, the aircraft overflew
the extended centerline. In an apparent attempt
to correct the situation, right rudder input was
applied along with right aileron. The aircraft
entered a snap roll and, at 223 feet agl, was too
low to recover. It crashed one-quarter mile from
the airport, and both pilots on board suffered
fatal injuries.
Investigators did not find any pre-accident
issues with the airframe or engine. The National
Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) cited
the CFI's failure to maintain control of the
airplane, which led to the inadvertent stall while
maneuvering near the airport, as the probable
cause. Although the CFI was giving instruction,
and was ultimately responsible, the 'student' in

this case was more familiar with the aircraft.
The private pilot had more than 1,300 hours,
230 of which were in the accident airplane make
and model. However, of the CFI's more than
1,400 hours of flight time, there were no logbook
entries indicating any previous experience in a
Cirrus SR22.
In our second case study, the multiengine and
instrument-rated flight instructor had more
than 20,000 hours of total time, and had flown as
recently as the day before. But he had no aerial
spraying experience, which was the operation
for which he was providing instruction at the
time of the accident.
The accident occurred in 2013, when the
CFI and private pilot were both killed while
