Some CFIs relish giving flight reviews. Others dread
it. After all, how much impact can you make in an hour
or two? As it turns out, a flight review can make a huge
difference in a pilot's life-especially if that pilot hasn't
been flying for a while.

AOPA's research has shown there are hundreds
of thousands of lapsed pilots in the United States,
and regardless of why they stopped flying, almost
all of them say they'd like to fly again when the
circumstances are right. For tens of thousands of pilots, the new BasicMed
regulations (see "CFI Notes" in this issue) could make this the moment to
get back in the air.
At AOPA we've been making a real effort to welcome these pilots back
into flying with the help of Rusty Pilots seminars-part of AOPA's "You

Can Fly" program to get more people flying more often. Rusty Pilots seminars
provide an overview of key topics for the flight review, but that's only half the
equation. To get back into flying, these pilots have to fly-and that's where you
come in.
CONSIDER THESE POINTS WHEN
YOU HELP A LAPSED PILOT FLY AGAIN
You may need to be extra patient with these "students." They may become
frustrated when they struggle to perform tasks that were once easy. Or they
may have trouble recognizing just how much they've forgotten, and need a
gentle nudge.

Although returning pilots only need a flight review to get back in the air, they
will probably need more than the minimum one hour of ground instruction and
one hour of flight instruction, and it's a good idea to let them know that right
