Doing the Right Thing
EASIER SAID THAN DONE

Before you cut them loose, help your students
consider these traps:
* Squeezing too much utility out of their aircraft
by attempting to fly in adverse weather, pushing
weight and balance limits, or stretching the
aircraft's fuel range.
* Pushing the limits of their skill or experience by
ignoring their proficiency level, regardless
of pilot currency.

decision making (ADM), so students can begin to comprehend the
relevance of anticipation, recognition, and timely action to correct a
problem. By checkride time, the ADM process should be well ingrained
into your students' flying. But what happens once they enjoy the freedom
of their private pilot certificate? Will they apply good ADM on every
flight? It can be easier said than done.

* Showing off flying skills to passengers or
onlookers by performing low-level flight or
improvised aerial demonstrations.
As a CFI, your experience tells you to pay attention
to things that give you pause, that don't fit with
what you're expecting. Instill that same awareness
in your clients. The sooner they recognize a
problem and start thinking about how to handle
it-the better are their chances of taking timely,
corrective action.

The recently updated Do the Right Thing:
Decision Making for Pilots course can help with
practicing decision-making skills while safely on
the ground (airsafetyinstitute.org/ courses/
dotherightthing). With three scenarios for
VFR pilots and two for IFR pilots, the course
offers choices depending on their stage in flying
or training. They'll be asked to make decisions
at certain points along a flight and the outcome
is determined by the decisions they've made-
just like in a real flying scenario. The course is
optimized for tablet computers.
