confirmed that "the wind was blowing really
hard," and post-accident analysis determined
that an advancing storm was pushing a gust
front past the airport at that moment. Three
minutes after the crash, a METAR recorded
winds from 080 degrees at 19 knots with
gusts to 25-a strong quartering tailwind for a
training aircraft that was small, slow, and light.
A post-crash fire consumed most of the engine
compartment, cockpit, fuselage, and tail while
the helicopter hovered over the site to guide
first responders.
The student was a foreign national studying
with the approval of the TSA. It was only his
fourth flight in two years; his logbook showed
just 4.1 hours after a discovery flight logged in
2011. The instructor was an Air Force flight
engineer who'd obtained his pilot certificate
five years earlier and logged 900 hours as
a civilian. The student's lack of experience
makes it seem likely that the instructor took
the controls as the gusts became challenging-

an interpretation supported by the autopsy
results, which found fractured bones in both of
the CFI's feet. The NTSB concluded that he'd
suffered those injuries in his struggle to manage
the aircraft, and attributed the crash to his "loss
of airplane control while departing in gusting
wind conditions that were conducive to lowlevel wind shear."
Experienced instructors take well-justified
pride in their ability to bring the ship home in
challenging conditions, but the rate at which
those conditions deteriorate merits attention of
its own. The doubling of the wind speed in three
and a half minutes could have been taken as an
indication that things would get sharply worse
before they began to get better.

statistician. He is a fixed-wing ATP with
commercial pilot privileges for helicopters and
the owner of a Piper Arrow.
