CFI NOTES
Good discussion. All CFIs should be proficient at touch
and goes. Students should be encouraged to turn over
the controls to the CFI at times when a debriefing would
be helpful so they can concentrate fully on required
information. If it's still too much for a given student, then
a few stop and goes or complete taxi backs are in order. If
a CFI doesn't debrief after any maneuver or flight lesson,
that is a fault of the CFI, not the maneuver's. If a CFI or
student is not comfortable with a touch and go, then they
should continue less rigorous training maneuvers until
they attain that basic proficiency. If a student doesn't feel
proficient at touch and goes just before the check-ride,
then more training is in order. If a student is proficient
at touch and goes, but does not wish to perform them
without immediate actual need while flying as solo PIC,
that can be a bonafide risk management decision.

PATTERN LEG TERMINOLOGY
We are having a problem at my airport with pilots
identifying the departure leg as upwind. If the pattern
is active (left hand) for Runway 29 and an aircraft
approaches from the north, the safest and proper way to
enter the pattern is on a left upwind. (Opposite direction
but in the same space as downwind for Runway 11.) At
our airport, when skydive operations are underway there
are to be no (termed in the AWOS "avoid...") midfield
crosswind entries. For safety reasons it's important to
have the correct terminology.
