CFI NOTES
I will continue to steer students to complete these
courses even though they are not all geared toward the
flying here or in other countries. But even so, it helps
students to understand and apply the subject with just
small adjustments needed; as in the differences in the
way METARS or TAFs are reported, etc. I look forward
to seeing more subjects added as time goes by. Keep up
the great work!!!

certificate renewal ( faasafety.gov/documents/Wings_
Manual.pdf ). I have enjoyed using the WINGS program
as a vehicle for keeping my CFI certificate valid and find
the knowledge exercises give equivalent knowledge as
delivered in a weekend FIRC.

appreciate the world-wide distribution of our efforts. Stay
tuned for new programs that we'll highlight in this newsletter.

That's a great correction and addition to ways to renew
your certificate. One thing I might point out is that to use
this method, you will need to present a completed FAA
Form 8710-1 along with your record of WINGS activity to
an aviation safety inspector (ASI) for renewal. Thanks for

CHIEF'S CORNER: COUNT THE WAYS TO TAKE A FIRC
Thanks to John Collins for the excellent article on FIRC's
and other frolics. While good, I also found it incomplete
when showing ways to renew one's CFI certificate.
Page 32 of the FAA Wings Pilot Proficiency Program
User's Guide (and the associated Advisory Circular:
AC 61-91J) provides another way to renew through
WINGS activity. All a CFI has to do is help a minimum

You might benefit from ASI's "Safety To Go Portal"
(airsafetyinstitute.org/safetytogo). The materials
are free and you can download stand-alone videos and
seminars in a zipped or compressed format so you can use
them without an internet connection. We'd recommend
the safety videos in the Margins of Safety series (Angle of
Attack Indicators, Avoiding Power-On Stalls, and Avoiding
Traffic Pattern Stalls). There's also an online website,
Skybrary, that might have useful information for you on
LOC (skybrary.aero/index.php/Loss_of_Control).
