COLLECTED WISDOM

EDITOR'S NOTE:
The following is a compilation of flight instructors' favorite techniques
for teaching a procedure, enhancing a student's aviation experience, and
promoting learning. Email cfinewsletter@aopa.org to share your favorite
instructional tip.
HIGHER NUMBER? TURN RIGHT
When teaching my instrument (and private) pilot students to use the magnetic
compass to turn, I tell them to turn right when they want to turn to a higher
compass heading number (e.g. from 175 to 300 degrees heading). Since many
magnetic compass cards are backwards, looking at the compass to determine
the direction of the turn can result in a turn the wrong way.

PLAN TO COMBAT UNEXPECTED CONTROL INPUTS
While teaching rudder control at low speeds approaching the stall, my student
froze with full right rudder input. When I applied heavy opposite rudder, my
seat back sheared with a loud pop as the aircraft entered a spin. The loud noise
shocked my student, who then released the pressure on the right rudder pedal,
enabling recovery. I now emphasize when I have control of the aircraft, and I
have a plan to regain control if needed.

-David F. Strober
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Flight instructors should focus on not talking too much. Keep directions
short and consistent during instruction. Allow the student to react and try the
maneuver being practiced before interjecting. Observe, evaluate, and then be
hands on. Throughout, emphasize to scan, scan, and scan.

KISSING THE RUNWAY
Instead of using the term "Flare" I say, "Fly it down to the numbers and
then hold it off."

-Robert R. Bash
LOSS OF CONTROL PREVENTION
In addition to having an angle of attack indicator installed in training aircraft
for cross-referencing, lifelong prevention of loss of control accidents should
begin with training students to set pitch, power, and trim in the pattern so they
can fly with only light finger tip pressure on the yoke and let go of it without
any change in pitch or airspeed. Also, students should experience flying VFR
approaches with the instruments covered up so that only outside visual
reference can be used, such as referencing the position of the horizon in the
windscreen. This allows the students to watch the runway environment on the
base leg and avoid overshooting the turn to final. It also teaches them to use the
horizon so that bank angles do not exceed 25 to 30 degrees at any point in the
pattern. Impress on them to only make very small adjustments in pitch, power,
and trim as needed to maintain a stabilized approach. Using these methods
from the very beginning in their training will encourage your students to not
over control the airplane, pull G-loads on the wings in the pattern, or increase
the angle of attack to a dangerous point (stall) at a low altitude.

-Kurt Kleiner
DUTCH ROLLS
For many years, I have used Dutch Rolls to help my students roll out on the
runway heading and maintain directional control during the descend and roll
out on the runway.
