NTSB ISSUES SAFETY ALERT ON WEIGHT AND BALANCE CALCULATIONS
The National Transportation Safety Board recently issued Safety Alert SA-072, Minding Weight,
Maintaining Balance. According to the alert, between 2008 and 2016, the probable causes of 136
general aviation accidents were related to pilots improperly conducting preflight performance
calculations for weight and balance-or not conducting them at all. One-third of these accidents
resulted in pilot and/or passenger deaths. The alert recommends pilots understand their aircraft's
performance limitations. It also cautions pilots to conduct weight and balance calculations using the
aircraft flight manual to ensure the aircraft is loaded within its weight and CG limits.

AMT AIRMAN CERTIFICATION STANDARDS DRAFT DOCUMENT AVAILABLE
The FAA will be replacing the Aviation Mechanic General, Airframe, and Powerplant Practical
Test Standards (PTS) with a single, more comprehensive, Aviation Maintenance Technician
(AMT) Airman Certification Standards (ACS) document. The ACS will help provide a single set of
standards for the AMT knowledge, oral, and practical tests and help applicants understand what
they will need to know, consider, and do to earn an AMT certificate with Airframe and Powerplant
ratings. The new AMT ACS draft is available at www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/acs/
media/amt_acs.pdf. The final version is expected to be effective June 2020.
