Q: I’m a student pilot and I’m still in college, which means I move around a lot. What are my responsibilities to keep the FAA updated with all my change of addresses? A: FAR 61.60 states that “the holder of a pilot, flight instructor, or ground instructor certificate who has made a change in permanent mailing address may not, after 30 days from that date, exercise the privileges of the certificate unless the holder has notified [the FAA] in writing.” A student pilot/ medical certificate is considered a pilot certificate; therefore, you have a responsibility to keep a current permanent mailing address on record with the FAA, and to notify the FAA of any change of that address within 30 days. The address that you provide to the FAA doesn’t have to be the one that you are physically occupying. Consider using your parents’ or other relative’s address while you’re in school. The consequence of failing to timely notify the FAA of a change in address is that you cannot exercise the privileges of your certificate until you do notify them, which in your case could affect your legal ability to solo. If you flew, that could be a violation of the FAR. You can change your address online at the FAA website (faa.gov), or send in a letter to the FAA, or you can complete a change of address form provided by the FAA, Form 8060-55.
