and you will find a number of training providers ranging from a small, intimate flight school at a local airport to a big-university flight program and everything in between. The best is one that fits your own lifestyle and finances. Frankly, they all do a fine job in training you to FAA standards and ultimately result in a pilot certificate. I would suggest that you surf the web and explore carefully any of those institutions that go the extra mile for the student. These are programs that offer internships or cooperative programs, and have a working relationship with a particular airline. Of course, even programs that had previously supplied pilot candidates directly to a partner airline in the past have had dif-
ficulty these past four years or so. With the soft economy and a slowdown in retirements at the major airlines, there was simply nowhere to send graduates if the jobs were not available. However, as the economy strengthens and the FAA considers the importance of academic training, academia may be playing a more important role going forward. I am most fascinated with your statement aiming to “get placed immediately into a good airline.” That just isn’t going to happen! Not unless the domestic airlines begin to adopt the ab initio concept. Truly, there may come a day when the airlines must recruit flying talent early in their careers, invest in their training, and promise a job at the end of the road.
NEVER TOO OLD
Information on training for "older" pilots is available in a special section on AOPA Online. The aviation subject report, "Older Student Pilots—Never Too Old" offers encouragement, technical information—on topics such as eyesight, health, drug usage, and energy levels—and additional resources such as previously published articles from Flight Training magazine and AOPA Pilot.
