Growing the Pilot Population When it comes to ensuring the future of general aviation, few things are more important than getting and keeping pilots flying. And yet, the number of new pilots taking flight has been steadily diminishing for decades. Just how serious is this decline? Consider a few statistics. The number of student pilot certificates issued in 2010 was only 53,380—down 40 percent compared to 1990. The decline in the number of new private pilots was even more precipitous—down 64 percent to 14,977 certificates issued in 2010 compared to 20 years ago. Approximately 60 percent of those who earn a student pilot certificate never earn a higher pilot certificate (e.g., private, recreational, or sport). And many more drop out before ever obtaining a student pilot certificate—placing the overall dropout rate at an estimated 70 to 80 percent. That’s why the AOPA Foundation is leading the way forward by supporting an ambitious initiative to rebuild the pilot population from the ground up. The AOPA Flight Training Student Retention Initiative is taking a critical look at flight training and identifying the reasons why so many students drop out without earning a certificate. With extensive and revealing new research in hand, the Foundation is collaborating with experts from all segments of the aviation and training communities to find real-world solutions to the challenges that are causing so many students to abandon their dreams of flying. This far-reaching issue won’t be resolved without consistent and sustained effort on the part of the general aviation community, and the AOPA Foundation needs your continued support to help turn the information into practical action.
