2010/2011 Philanthropy Report | 22 Member Profile | John McBride, Hat in the Ring Society John grew up in Illinois and Wisconsin, and his father was a general aviation pilot in the 1920s. Following his father’s lead, he now holds airplane single- and multiengine land, single-engine sea, and instrument ratings, and has roughly 6,500 hours. John and his wife, Laurie, have been married for 46 years. Laurie is not a pilot but she has taken the Air Safety Institute’s PinchHitter course. Two of their three children are pilots. Their youngest son, Peter McBride, a photojournalist, is the non-pilot. Peter’s recent book, The Colorado River: Flowing Through Conflict, is 70 percent aerial photography, and John was Peter’s pilot for the shots. Peter also authored a May 2000 National Geographic story titled “Queen of the African Sky,” which detailed the flight of a Vickers Vimy replica from England to South Africa. John and Laurie moved to Aspen in 1966. They live on the “Lost Marbles Ranch” near Old Snowmass, Colorado. John says, “When I told friends and family that we were going to live on a ranch in Colorado, they thought I must have lost my marbles— hence, the name.” He has a grass strip on the ranch and flies a Super Cub on skis (with retractable wheels) as well as a Cessna 180. He provides yet another example of how general aviation helps America because he uses his aircraft in his cattle business. John captained the Princeton ice hockey team and played on the U.S. hockey team. He still holds the Princeton scoring record! Recently he joined a new team, as one of the AOPA Hat in the Ring Society members who are helping general aviation to have a winning future. Photo by Katie Girtman Michael H.
