2010/2011 Philanthropy Report | 24 Member Profile | Pat Tracy, Life Member Pat learned to fly in his teens and recognized early on that general aviation is a valuable tool for his family’s business. Pat, the second of a dozen siblings growing up in rural Mount Sterling, Illinois, earned a private pilot’s license at 17—one of six of his brothers and sisters to do so. Their father, Robert Tracy, had founded Dot Foods (named for Pat’s mother, Dorothy), in 1960 and flew a Cessna 182 to expand the business throughout the Midwest. “My dad provided the opportunity to learn to fly” Pat says, “and we learned to fly at about the same age as we learned to drive.” Pat joined the company after he graduated from college, eventually becoming CEO and leading a national expansion. He’s now the company chairman and flies a Cessna Citation Mustang. The company’s aviation capabilities have also grown: Dot Foods currently operates a Citation Bravo, TBM 700, Cessna 414, and Cessna 206. “General aviation has been an essential part of our success,” he says. “Our headquarters is in a small community 120 miles from St. Louis and 240 miles from Chicago. We’re a national company with nine distribution centers, and flying gives us an efficient way to visit customers, manufacturers, and suppliers.” Pat supports the AOPA Foundation because “general aviation is often misunderstood. It’s not a toy, or something frivolous. It’s critical to protect aviation and its infrastructure, and keep it affordable.” Photo by David Ulmer Robert A.
