I Members Who Know Media I APMA’s Public Relations Department (PR) often fields questions from members who are interested in promoting their practices and the profession but don’t know where to begin. Finding and using promotional tools is simpler than you may think, as the executive director of the Texas Podiatric Medical Association (TPMA) explains below. blocks,” which help generate awareness of podiatric medicine. APMA is happy to assist you with these efforts. (See contact information at the end of this column.) However, APMA has created easily customizable advertising materials to fit your needs! Most recently, TPMA sought to publicize the Today’s Podiatrist campaign within our state. We have been determined to educate other medical specialties about podiatrists’ capabilities, and we knew print advertising would be an effective way to get our message to this audience. APMA’s PR staff offered us an existing Today’s Podiatrist advertisement APMA had created for internal use. We were able to customize this ad to fit our state’s specific message. To ensure the ad was adapted to be appropriate for a print publication, TPMA hired and worked with a graphic designer to manipulate the text. We then submitted the final ad to the medical publication in which we intended to advertise. The entire process took us less than a week. All members should be aware that APMA provides access to these essential advertising “building APMA’s PR staff offered us an existing Today’s Podiatrist advertisement APMA had created for internal use . We were able to customize this ad to fit our state’s specific message . QUESTION: Evan Breth, DPM, Brooklyn, N.Y.— I recently created a new website for my practice, but now I need quality content to fill my Web pages. Does APMA have any materials for me to use? ANSWER: Congratulations on creating your website! Yes, APMA has a wealth of information located on both its public and member websites (www.apma.org and www.apma.org/members) that it encourages members to link to from their practice websites. Currently, APMA requests that all members link to the Today’s Podiatrist website, www.todays podiatrist.com, from their practice pages. These links help increase traffic to TodaysPodiatrist.com and promote the campaign. The Today’s Podiatrist website contains vital information about podiatric medicine for three target audiences: patients, students interested in a medical career, and medical professionals. If you are looking for more specific foot-health information to feature on your website, all of APMA’s foot-health brochures are available for free at www. apma.org/brochures. Members can either link directly to these brochures or copy the specific brochure information verbatim to their own websites. Please note that APMA asks its members to cite APMA as the source of this information. Finally, APMA’s slide databank contains a variety of medical images related to podiatric medicine. Many members find these images useful not only for their websites, but also in PowerPoint presentations to patients and health-care providers. Visit www.apma.org/slides to view and download the images. These resources are only a handful of the website content available free of charge to APMA members. As new materials are created, they will be mentioned in future installments of “Members Who Know Media.” n Have a question about improving your communication skills that you would like to see answered in a future column?
