The Public Health and Preventive Podiatric Medicine Committee (PHPPMC) researched and contacted various disaster-relief organizations and has chronicled that information at www.apma.org/disaster-relief-volunteer-resource. PHPPMC APMA Partners with BioMedix for CRC Distribution A also has compiled information on various ongoing humanitarian and relief efforts at www.apma.org/Humanitarian-ReliefDatabase. For APMA members, the disaster-relief resource addresses a need that was clearly identified after Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti. Immediately following these events, APMA members contacted APMA asking how they could get involved in emergency medical efforts. The information gathered by PHPPMC will allow members to be properly prepared for the next disaster, whether it occurs locally or internationally. “Each disaster will present different responses and medical needs,” said PHPPMC Chair Janet Simon, DPM, “but as many of our APMA members found out through their Haiti experiences, podiatrists are vital team members who can provide medical triaging and care that is within their scope of practice and training.” PHPPMC continues to work on identifying opportunities for APMA members interested in volunteering to participate in disaster relief and will inform the membership of these opportunities as they become available.
