Caro Advertising Manager Rachel Richards Editor Emeritus David J. Zych © 2011, APMA APMA Newsbimonthly in July/ (ISSN 8750-2585) is published monthly, except President’s Message By Michael J. King, DPM Off and Running Just a few weeks into my presidency, I am off and running—quite literally! I just returned from a week in the United Kingdom, where I attended the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists’ house of delegates meeting, and then it was off to Washington for APMA’s State Advocacy Forum. My travel schedule is not the only thing heating up, however. During APMA’s House of Delegates meeting, the house adopted a resolution to create a task force focused on accountable care organizations (ACOs). We have already checked this off our list; our task force is off and running, as well, and will begin its study of ACOs and the ramifications of definition as ACO professionals. We are pursuing a meeting with Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius. In addition, we’re enhancing and increasing our collaborative efforts. In order to achieve Vision 2015, we must foster collaborative relationships with other medical specialties and educate them about our education, training, and experience. As you know, we have established a wonderful relationship with the Society for Vascular Surgery, and we will continue to nurture that collaboration. We’ve also made inroads with the American Osteopathic Association and other groups. At the State Advocacy Forum, we heard from Laura Tosi, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Children’s National Medical Center. Dr. Tosi is a wonderful ally for podiatric medicine and shared with us her belief that what we have in common with orthopedic surgeons far outweighs our differences. “The turf wars are killing us,” Dr. Tosi said. “Quality education and quality standards should help us get over this.” That spirit of working together to fix the problem, not the blame, is precisely the attitude that will allow us to advance our cause. Enhanced collaboration depends on increased communication, not just with other specialties and legislators, but within our own profession. To that end, your Board of Trustees is working with the state components to use technology to communicate more efficiently and economically. We are taking advantage of Skype, a software application that allows video conferencing over the Internet, to participate in component societies’ meetings and share APMA news and information. We are also focused on enfranchising the future of our profession: young members and students. I look forward to involving them in APMA and giving them the tools they need to lead podiatric medicine into the future. As you will see in the special APMA Educational Foundation section in this issue, we have a longstanding commitment to students and young members. Our foundation continues to offer financial support to deserving podiatric medical students through its scholarship program; this year’s goal is to raise $175,000. We are well on our way, and I encourage you to support students by making your own donation to the APMA Educational Foundation. Also in this issue, you will read complete coverage of the 91st House of Delegates meeting, learn more about cutting-edge surgical workshops at the 2011 Annual Scientific Meeting, and read a special report on the Affordable Care Act one year after passage. I think you’ll see from the breadth of coverage in this magazine that your association is working for you on many fronts. We are truly off and running in pursuit of your goals for podiatric medicine. n 6 APMA News May 2011
