King, DPM Planning for Success “People with clear, written goals accomplish far more in a shorter period of time than people without them could ever imagine.” —Brian Tracy, motivational speaker I shared this quote in my inaugural speech at the 2011 House of Delegates because I believe it is so critical to have a strategic plan in place for our association. That plan should include clear, ambitious, achievable goals that establish an obvious path for us to follow into the future. In May, APMA held a strategic planning retreat to set those goals and plot our course for the next several years. This retreat was unique in that it was very inclusive. We included not only members of the Board of Trustees and senior staff, but also representatives of the stakeholder community. We invited young members, state component representatives, and others—a total of 40 participants in all—to be a part of the meeting and share their perspectives on the priorities of the organization. In addition to inviting diverse members of the profession, we conducted a survey in preparation for the retreat, asking about member satisfaction with APMA, the role of the organization in a variety of important issues facing health-care professionals, podiatrists’ practice settings, and more. We surveyed the 2011 House of Delegates, a random sampling of APMA members, young members, component execs, component presidents, APMA affiliate leadership, and non-member practitioners. This survey data offered an evidence-based foundation for our strategic discussion. We also relied upon data from our recent communications survey, as well as our current strategic plan, to help us adjust our goals and refine our plans. During the retreat, we devoted significant time to the discussion of accountable care organizations (ACOs), the implementation of health information technology, ICD-10, health-care reform, our progress toward Vision 2015, and many other strategic issues. We developed a new strategic plan for using your dues dollars wisely and in the best interest of the entire profession. Watch for a full report from the retreat in the July/August issue of APMA News. In this issue, you’ll read about our current efforts on many of these fronts: Learn about the outcomes of our State Advocacy Forum, where more than 70 APMA members discussed how relationships with legislators and other health-care professionals can help us achieve Vision 2015. Read a review of the Affordable Care Act a year later in part two of a special report from Legislative Committee Chair Phillip E. Ward, DPM. Get the latest on the activities of the new ACO task force established at the mandate of the House of Delegates in our Reimbursement column. As you can see, APMA already is hard at work on the strategic issues that will lead our organization and our profession into the future—and to the accomplishment of our ultimate goals as set forth in Vision 2015. As we continue to invest our resources in the pursuit of our strategic goals, I believe we will see great results for the podiatric medical profession.
