APMA Media Event Wrap-Up Toning Shoes Are All The Rage, Along with Podiatrists’ Expert Advice By now you’ve probably seen more than one of those glossy Reebok advertisements promoting toning shoes. The ads unabashedly encourage women consumers to “Love Your …”——well, gluteus maximus, to be medically accurate. APMA recently teamed up with Reebok, a recipient of the APMA Seal of Acceptance, for a “Take a Lap with Today’s Podiatrist” media event to encourage consumers to love their feet, as well. Because research has shown that women are making health-care decisions for their families, the purpose of the event was to ensure women—— and their parents, children, spouses, and siblings—— receive important messages about smart footwear choices and expert care by podiatrists. Major consumer magazines such as Real Simple, Health, Marie Claire, and Woman’s Day all assigned writers and editors to attend the event and learn more about podiatric medicine. Several health-focused blogs, including Fitbie.com and AOL Health, attended the event as well. APMA took over the rooftop deck of the Reebok Sports Club/NY in Manhattan, where these major consumer magazines are headquartered. Reporters were invited to try on toning shoes and take a lap around the outdoor track. Four New York-based APMA members were on hand to answer questions and educate the media. The toning shoes were a hot topic that drew great interest, but the event was by design a “Podiatric Medicine 101” course for several inﬂuential media outlets. APMA members offered foot health demonstrations, informal gait analyses, and insole inspections. Several APMA Seal-holding companies donated products to the event, including socks, nail polish, and lotion. Reebok generously lent technology experts to help explain the toning technology used in its EasyTone® and RunTone® shoes, both of which have been awarded the APMA Seal of Acceptance. APMA members who participated in the event not only answered questions, but also built and solidiﬁed relationships that likely will result in frequent contact with reporters when they have foot-health questions.
