Young Voices By Erin Klein, DPM Confessions of a Future Podiatric Fellow Although the four years of podiatry school seemed neverending, residency seemed like it started yesterday—and that was three years ago. The concept of finding a job after residency in a state 800 miles away and in the worst economy since the Great Depression was daunting and extremely difficult. After investigating multiple opportunities, I became quite frustrated with the entire process, as I clearly was not succeeding. I had to do some soul searching. What I realized is that I wasn’t succeeding in finding employment because I was looking for what others had told me to look for. It was not what I actually wanted. But what did I want? I was looking for an opportunity for greatness where I could continue to learn, further myself, conduct research, and contribute to the podiatric medical profession. I found all of these things in fellowship training. So the question is: Why would one choose fellowship training? 1. Furthering myself to further the profession—Undertaking the responsibility of fellowship training requires determination, perseverance, and a true commitment to making yourself the best that you can be. By participating in fellowships, I can further the profession of podiatric medicine. 2. Research—Residency was busy. I spent considerable time developing myself as a physician and investing time developing my residents and students in a similar manner. My schedule did not always allow time for things like sleep and meals, never mind doing research. Spending a year in fellowship training will allow me the opportunity to participate in research and satisfy my personal hunger to answer some burning questions I have. 3. Mentoring—As students, we needed mentors to aid with the challenges of being medical students and excite us about the profession we were about to enter. As residents, we needed mentors to foster growth and build character. As fellows, the opportunity to have mentors will continue to challenge us professionally, guide us through the everchanging world of health care, and help us get accustomed to the “real world.” 4. Geography—In general, podiatric medicine involves treating disorders of the lower extremity. However, podia46 APMA News July/August 2011 try in New York is not the same as podiatry in Wyoming; local standards of care and treatment options vary from state to state. If you have participated in residency training in one state but are planning to live and practice in another state, fellowship training can offer the opportunity to network in the new area and acclimate to the local standards of care, which may require learning new techniques. I was looking for an opportunity for greatness where I could continue to learn, further myself, conduct research, and contribute to the podiatric medical profession. I found all of these things in fellowship training. 5. Parity—Many MD/DO residents participate in fellowship training programs to hone and master the skills of their professions. Why shouldn’t we? Finishing residency this month, I can say without question that I am very confident in my surgical skills. Fellowship training will allow mastery of concepts and techniques, as well as the finesse of balancing it all. As a fellowship-trained podiatrist, I will be able to enter the world with training that truly is similar to that of other surgeons and physicians. 6. Thirst for knowledge and hunger for education—I never thought I would say this, but I’m a professional student. I love learning new things, trying new things, and finding innovative new ways to fix things that are broken. Fellowship training will allow me these opportunities. For more information on available fellowship opportunities, please see the list of CPME-approved fellowships on the APMA website at www.apma.org/Members/Education/CP ME Accreditation/Fellowships.aspx.
