King, DPM Getting Connected “Leaders make the expected connections.” During my address to the House of Delegates, I outlined some of the qualities that define a leader, including the ability to make connections. Leaders never stand alone—they value collaboration. I spent much of May and June on the road visiting our colleagues in the health-care profession, and I can tell you that your profession places the highest value on collaboration. Everywhere I went, I saw that our collegial approach is yielding huge benefits for podiatric medicine. As you know, APMA has fostered a truly rewarding relationship with the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS). We have reaped the benefits of that relationship through joint publications, joint educational opportunities, and SVS support of recognition of podiatrists as physicians. At the recent SVS annual meeting, APMA member John S. Steinberg, DPM, from Georgetown University, spoke about what podiatrists contribute to diabetic limb salvage. He did a phenomenal job educating the audience about how podiatrists save limbs and lives. Even better, SVS demonstrated its unparalleled support for our profession by allowing podiatrists to join SVS as members in a physician category. APMA members interested in joining can visit the SVS website, www.vascularweb.org/about/join/Pages/associate.aspx. The APMA delegation went straight from the SVS meeting to AMA’s House of Delegates. Although our relationship with AMA is not always as positive as our work with SVS, this event was very productive. APMA Executive Director and CEO Glenn B. Gastwirth, DPM, and I had conversations with AMA’s president-elect, speaker of the house, trustees, delegates, and others. We also were able to make contact with the executive director of the Medical Society of the State of New York; the executive director of the Massachusetts Medical Society; Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, MD; and CPT representatives. We made connections, expected and otherwise! During the meeting, Dr. Gastwirth and I had an outstanding opportunity to speak to an AMA reporter about the unprecedented relationship among the California Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA), the California Medical Association, and the California Orthopaedic Association. The collaboration is designed to evaluate podiatric medical education in California with the goal of parity with allopathic and osteopathic medical education. As I told the reporter, podiatrists welcome the opportunity to have these discussions with other health-care professionals about our education, training, and experience. My congratulations go to CPMA for reaching out to and working with organizations that historically have opposed the advancement of podiatric medicine. As we strive to achieve the goals of parity outlined in Vision 2015, our relationships will be our greatest asset. This issue of APMA News is full of stories of members making a great name for podiatric medicine: New York podiatrists representing APMA at our media event; a solo practitioner testifying before Congress about the impact of health information technology; and an APMA past president stepping in at PICA, not only as president of a podiatric medical liability insurance company, but also as chief medical officer at a division of a national medical liability insurance provider.
