Residency Consortium Enhances Podiatric Medical Training S BY ZEESHAN HUSAIN, DPM been sponsored by pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies, allowing residents and attending faculty to participate free of charge. Another goal of the consortium is to collaborate on research. By pooling cases and pathology, the consortium is able to compile large-sample studies. Residents and fellows from Detroit Medical Center and St. John Hospital and Medical Center are investigating various parameters that affect gas gangrene outcomes. The ultimate goal is to optimize and direct treatment in an area that has significant morbidity and mortality. At a time when legislators are emphasizing prevention, this study could help podiatrists demonstrate their effectiveness and value to the public and within the medical field. The consortium hopes to produce other studies with significant sample sizes. The consortium has the support of the Michigan Podiatric Medical Association (MPMA) and the Michigan chapter of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. At the MPMA annual scientific meeting last April, the results of the consortium’s focus on research were clear: Residents presented six research projects and 18 case studies. The Michigan Podiatric Residency Consortium will continue to explore new ways to collaborate and enhance the quality of residency education and training. In a relatively short time, the consortium has already accomplished tangible goals. We hope to bring Michigan podiatric residency programs back to the forefront of podiatric medical training. n outheastern Michigan has a rich history as the epicenter of podiatric medical training. There are now 12 approved podiatric medicine and surgery residency programs in the greater Detroit area, and the majority of the podiatrists in the state are concentrated in this area. Many podiatrists have privileges at multiple institutions and cross-train residents. But until a few years ago, there was little communication or collaboration among the programs despite their relative proximity. The Michigan Podiatric Residency Consortium was created more than two years ago to bring together the 11 residency programs that existed at the time. The directors and assistant directors met to determine whether they could collaborate on teaching efforts. Each program already was providing academic lectures, workshops, and programs for its own residents and staff. They identified a need to raise the quality of training for residents as well as podiatric staff. The consortium’s mission statement is: to enhance and promote residency training, education, and experiences through a mutually collaborative and cooperative effort among residency programs within Michigan. Objectives toward achieving this mission include: I. Sharing educational resources a. Didactic and educational lectures, case presentations, etc. b. Research resources c. Surgical skills assessment/training courses, workshops, etc. Residency Programs and Directors n Botsford General Hospital—Marshall Solomon, DPM; Jeffrey Yung, DPM (assistant director) n Detroit Medical Center—Charles Kissel, DPM; Zeeshan Husain, DPM (assistant director) n Genesys Regional Medical Center—Irvin Kanat, DPM n Henry Ford Macomb Hospital—Brian Loder, DPM n Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital— Christopher Olenech, DPM n Oakwood Annapolis Hospital—Lawrence Fallat, DPM n POH Medical Center—Stuart Bass, DPM n Providence Hospital—Irvin Kanat, DPM n Southeast Michigan Surgical Hospital— Kyle Sundblad, DPM n St. John Hospital and Medical Center— Stuart Wertheimer, DPM n St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital— Anthony Benenati, DPM n St. Mary Mercy Livonia—Ronald Adelman, DPM II. Fostering open communication among programs and building camaraderie The residency programs began collaborating on quarterly educational meetings. Topics have covered basic anatomic dissection, practice management, wound care, infectious disease, peri-operative diabetic management, pathology, and elective and reconstructive surgery techniques. The meetings have 26 APMA News September 2011
