Caro Advertising Manager Rachel Richards Editor Emeritus David J. Zych © 2011, APMA APMA Newsbimonthly in July/ (ISSN 8750-2585) is published monthly, except President’s Message By Michael J. King, DPM Giving Back to Podiatric Medicine “Leadership … often means sacrifices must be made.” As I write this message, I’ve just returned from a phenomenally successful Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston. With more than 4,000 registrants, it was one of our largest meetings on record. As usual, this meeting was not just an opportunity to advance our scientific and clinical knowledge or learn what new products and services are available. The National was an opportunity to reconnect with the podiatric medical community. At every reception, every lecture, every workshop, I saw friends and colleagues connecting with each other and with their profession. For me, that sense of unity is something that has always made podiatry special. Our profession has given us what amounts to a second family. The friends and mentors I have gained as a member of this profession have shaped me both as a physician and as a man. As members of that podiatric medical family, we have a responsibility to give back. During my inaugural address, I told you that leaders must make sacrifices. We must give back. We can give back with our dollars by contributing to APMAPAC and the APMA Educational Foundation. We can give back with our participation by getting involved in our state components or national organization and attending meetings and events. We can give back with our time by educating legislators, teaching residents, or volunteering in our communities. Two members of our profession have chosen to give back not only to their profession but to their country. Brad Wenstrup, DPM, is making a bid for the US House of Representatives in Ohio’s second congressional district. Lee Rogers, DPM, also plans a run for the house in the 25th district in California. Dr. Wenstrup is a decorated veteran who served 15 months of active duty in Iraq as chief of surgery with the 344th Combat Support Hospital. He is now in private practice in Cincinnati. Read more about Dr. Wenstrup in this month’s APMA All Stars column, page 51. Dr. Rogers also is a “star”—he was honored as the APMA Rising Star at this year’s House of Delegates meeting. He is chair of the Foot Council of the American Diabetes Association and associate medical director of the amputation center at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Los Angeles. These exceptional APMA members are setting an example for all of us with their willingness to give back to their profession and their communities. I hope every member of our podiatry family will support them in their bids for election. What a great thing it would be to have a podiatrist in Congress to help educate our legislators from the inside! I encourage each of you to reflect on what this profession has given you and, more importantly, on how you can give back. Maybe it’s something small like attending the Annual Scientific Meeting next August in Washington, DC, to help APMA celebrate its centennial (read more starting on page 10). Or maybe you are ready to make a contribution on a national level by serving on a committee, running for the Board of Trustees, or even participating in the national political process. Whatever you choose to do to help unite and strengthen this terrific profession, rest assured that your podiatric family is grateful. 6 APMA News September 2011
