Caro Advertising Manager Rachel Richards Editor Emeritus David J. Zych © 2011, APMA APMA Newsbimonthly in July/ (ISSN 8750-2585) is published monthly, except President’s Message By Michael J. King, DPM The Whole Is Greater than the Sum of Its Parts “We are a family … we are a team … we have common goals. No one person or group can solve all the problems we encounter, but by sharing of information and helping each other … we can solve the vast majority of the issues we face.” During my inaugural address to the House of Delegates, I spoke about the importance of diverse groups within podiatric medicine functioning as one team. Nowhere is the power of cooperation and collaboration more evident than among APMA’s affiliate organizations. APMA recognizes 15 affiliate groups including specialty, clinical interest, and related organizations. These groups are self-sufficient organizations that function independently from APMA but bring value to APMA members through their focus on unique aspects of podiatric medicine. APMA, with its broad scope, benefits from the ability of these groups to focus more intently on various clinical, practical, and professional topics. The affiliate organizations rely on the talents and resources of their members and leadership to offer education, professional resources, publications, patient materials, and more. APMA members can earn continuing medical education credits and learn new surgical techniques from our surgical affiliate; stay up to date on the latest in podiatric dermatology with our dermatological affiliate; or make powerful networking connections through our women’s affiliate. In each issue of APMA News, the Affiliates Corner allows affiliate organizations to share news and information with APMA members. We also include a listing of the affiliate organizations opposite the Affiliates Corner, including websites, contact information, and a brief description of each organization’s mission. Affiliates also are represented on APMA’s website at www.apma.org/ affiliated, and they offer programming at our Annual Scientific Meeting. This year, one of our affiliates marks a significant milestone: The American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM) celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2011. I extend my sincere congratulations to AAPPM on behalf of the Board of Trustees and everyone at APMA. AAPPM does a great service to the profession, offering us authoritative information about advancing our practices and mastering the business of practicing medicine. It’s fitting as AAPPM observes its anniversary that this issue of APMA News should have a significant focus on practice management topics. Don’t miss important information about the transition to ICD-10. We start by offering you a detailed look at how coding for a common podiatric injury will change from ICD-9 to ICD-10 (page 10). We also offer an update on the transition timeline (page 13). In that same practice management vein, APMA Trustee Laura J. Pickard, DPM, offers the third in her popular five-part series “Can They Really Do That?” examining private insurance contracting topics (page 28). And APMA Director of Scientific Affairs James R. Christina, DPM, examines important considerations in selecting an electronic health record system for your practice (page 26). I encourage you to read this important content and to read the Affiliates Corner (page 50) to learn more about our affiliate organizations. Consider joining one or more of these great groups to enhance your career and support the diverse parts that make up the powerful whole of our podiatric medical family. 6 APMA News October 2011 http://www.apma.org/WorkingForYou/content.cfm?ItemNumber=1201 http://www.apma.org/WorkingForYou/content.cfm?ItemNumber=1201
