Technoﬁle Make APMA’s Social Media Work for You APMA has had tremendous success using social media as a communications tool, particularly with members of the public who are interested in foot and ankle health. Since January 2011, our followers on Twitter have more than quadrupled (as of this writing, we were closing in on 17,000 followers), and our content on social media is generating millions of impressions. We’ve told you in this space about the value of social media for your practice and how to set up various accounts (see the November/December 2011 issue of APMA News at www.nxt book.com/nxtbooks/apma/news_201111/#/58). Once your practice has entered the social networking arena, you may ﬁnd it challenging to populate your social media accounts with relevant content on a regular basis. Studies show that the optimal frequency for posting to Facebook and tweeting is about three times a day for both vehicles. The ﬁrst step: Follow APMA on social media channels. If you haven’t already, visit www.facebook.com/TheAPMA and “like” us. Visit http://twitter.com/apmatweets and follow APMA on Twitter. Once you have liked APMA on Facebook and followed APMA on Twitter, APMA’s posts will appear on your Facebook wall, and our tweets will appear on your Twitter feed. APMA has a robust social media posting schedule that includes information for members, patients, and even legislators and other health-care providers. Every department at APMA participates in generating content for our social media channels, so you’ll ﬁnd posts and tweets about everything from the latest news on our Title XIX efforts to updates on outreach to other medical organizations to foot health tips perfect for your patients. You can pick and choose from those items and share them with your own fans on Facebook or retweet them to your followers on Twitter. To share a post from APMA on your own Facebook wall, simply click the “Share” link beneath the post. To retweet an item on Twitter, select the retweet icon 1 . Both channels allow you to add your own comment if you wish. In addition to our Facebook posts and tweets, APMA houses an extensive library of popular videos (our ﬂip ﬂop video 40 APMA News January 2012 2 alone has had close to 23,000 views) on its YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/theAPMA. Peruse the videos there, which cover topics from shoe shopping to general information about podiatric medicine. If you would like to share a video from APMA’s channel with your followers on Facebook or Twitter, select the “Share” link directly under the video player on YouTube 2 . Then select the icon for the social media channel on which you would like to share the video. When used properly, social media can be a valuable marketing tool for your practice and position you as a medical expert with local media, legislators, and other health-care professionals.
