NBPME is seeking fourth-year podiatric medical student volunteers to take the pilot exam and assist in NBPME’s efforts to advance the goals of Vision 2015. Students who take the pilot exam will receive a $100 honorarium from NBPME for their participation. The exam is for statistical analysis, so it will not be scored individually and will have no impact on students’ academic records or future board examination scores. During medical training, podiatric medical students are required to pass board examinations similar to components of the USMLE. However, the USMLE requires an extra step designed to assess whether students are prepared to apply their medical knowledge in a clinical setting with a live patient. During the Step 2 Clinical Skills exam, allopathic and osteopathic students meet with “standardized patients”—actors who have been trained to present clinical scenarios to the student. Candidates first review a “patient’s” chart, then meet with the actor. Afterwards, candidates are evaluated by examiners and the actors based on their notes and the skills they demonstrate during the clinical encounters. One of the goals of Vision 2015 is to ensure that podiatric medical education is comparable to allopathic and osteopathic education. “NBPME believes establishing podiatric board examinations similar to the USMLE is an important way of furthering that goal,” said NBPME Vice President Charles Lombardi, DPM. NBPME has worked closely with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) to evaluate the feasibility of offering this exam and to develop the pilot. NBPME is seeking 100 to 200 fourth-year podiatric medical students to participate in the pilot. Once the pilot exam is complete, NBPME will decide whether to move ahead with designing a live exam, based on the results of the pilot and the experience of NBME in administering such clinical skills exams with allopathic and osteopathic students. Fourth-year students who wish to be a part of this effort to achieve similitude with allopathic and osteopathic medicine should visit www.apmle.org for more information and to register for the Clinical Skills-Patient Encounter Examination, which takes place February 14–29 in Philadelphia. • • APMA Meets with Aetna and CIGNA APMA held successful, productive meetings with Aetna and CIGNA in the fall of 2011. As part of the Health Systems Committee’s (HSC) private insurance outreach initiative, APMA shared with insurers the results of the Thomson Reuters and Duke studies, which underscore the value of care by podiatrists in saving limbs and lives. The collaborative meeting with Aetna occurred at APMA headquarters and focused on member concerns. HSC established contacts with Aetna and plans further discussions. HSC met with CIGNA at its headquarters in Connecticut in early fall. APMA also collaborated with the New York State Podiatric Medical Association to educate insurers in New York about the Thomson Reuters study. HSC plans to target decision-makers, including employers and collective bargaining groups, which represent significant purchasing blocks for medical care. APMA will continue to have constructive dialogue with insurers about member issues and keep members updated on its progress.
