Instead of having an in-person or phone conversation covering numerous topics over several minutes, teens prefer to communicate in shorter, but much more frequent, spurts of information. However, the technology used to send and receive these bursts of info is highly intuitive and advanced. During April’s Foot Health Awareness Month, APMA is targeting this multitasking, mass technology-savvy age group. Titled “myFEET,” the spring campaign is dedicated to fulfilling Generation Z’s insatiable need for information. Months of research that involved taking cues from popular sources of teen information including magazines, websites, and television shows led to the creation of myFEET. Focusing on this research, APMA, with the expert assistance of its Public Education & Information Committee, has created and is delivering foot-health information the way teens today need it: digitally, quickly, and with a personal focus. The myFEET campaign officially launched at the beginning of April and will run throughout the month. Campaign components include: continued on page 12 Gen Z and martphones, tablets, and constant texting are all a large part of one thriving generation’s daily life: Generation Z. Who exactly are they? There is debate, but most seem to agree that those born in the mid-1990s to 2010 fall within the Z category. They are typically the children of Generation X, but some Z parents include the youngest Baby Boomers and the oldest members of Generation Y. Who is Gen Z? Basically, they are today’s teenagers. According to the US Census Bureau, one in four Americans is younger than 18 and that number is growing. This populous group of “digital natives” is also on track to be the most well-informed generation ever due to its instantaneous access to large amounts of information. Gen Z isn’t bound by the constraints of previous generations; they can access what they want when they want it and take action now. Today’s teens have never known the frustration of flipping through the Encyclopedia Britannica to find an answer; instead, information arrives at the tap of a smartphone screen. About 288 million results are available in less than 0.14 seconds: JFGI, as they say, just freaking Google it. APMA News April 2012 11
