APMA All Stars Patricia Nicholas, DPM: Healing Bodies and Souls in Haiti Patricia Nicholas, DPM, is not only the mother of three active children, a trustee for the New York State Podiatric Medical Association, and a practicing physician. She also has found time to create and run an ambitious charity foundation benefiting the people of one of the poorest nations in the world. Dr. Nicholas, who was born in Haiti, immigrated to the US when she was 14 years old. Her parents worked difficult jobs and long hours so she and her brother could continue their education. While she always knew she wanted a career in medicine, Dr. Nicholas didn’t know podiatric medicine was the choice for her until she was nearly finished with her undergraduate degree. She began doing clerical work in the New York office of APMA Trustee Frank Spinosa, DPM, and fell in love with the profession. After graduating from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, Dr. Nicholas established a successful practice in Wading River, NY. After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, she was moved to put her medical skills to use in her former home. Dr. Nicholas traveled to Haiti to help in whatever way she could. “I’m an incredibly spiritual woman,” Dr. Nicholas said. “I felt God told me to go back to Haiti after the earthquake, and so I did.” APMA took note of this volunteer effort and highlighted Dr. Nicholas’ selfless contributions immediately following the tragedy. “We went once and helped all of these people, which was great, but I kept asking, ‘What happens to them in two weeks after we leave?’” she said. “Who is going to help save these people once I’m not here?” Kindest Hearts Foundation became her answer. With tens of thousands of Haitians displaced after the earthquake, food and medical resources were limit- Patricia Nicholas, DPM, and her sponsored child Benia. All Stars in APMA History: Donald W. Field, DSC Donald W. Field, DSC, believed his profession needed a makeover. He considered the term “chiropodist” (and National Association of Chiropodists) hopelessly out of date and believed the profession would never achieve recognition from other medical professionals while it used the chiropodist moniker. Dr. Field was relentless in his pursuit of a name change, lobbying to state presidents and the officers of the NAC; consulting other physicians and hospital administrators; speaking to students; and requesting opinions from English professors and the editorial department of Webster’s Dictionary. As a result of Dr. Field’s campaign and its growing popularity with the membership, the 1957 House of Delegates adopted a resolution changing the association’s name to the American Podiatry Association.
