SUPPLEMENT TO APMA NEWS YOUR APMA / PAGE 4 APMA HOSTS YOUNG PHYSICIANS’ CODING FORUM Y oung physicians gathered at APMA headquarters in February for an open forum about APMA’s coding resources and how the association should develop materials and events targeted to its younger practitioners. Hosted by the APMA Coding Committee, the event brought together coding experts and young physicians from across the country. During the forum, participants discussed everything from their office coding practices to their level of coding confidence and how they prefer to receive coding information. Although young physicians told APMA the need for coding information is not as great for young physicians in larger, multispecialty practices, they underscored the need for all young physicians to have a general understanding of coding in order to ensure their practices are doing it right and doing it ethically. They also expressed the need to understand the basics so they could dictate and document appropriately for their office coding managers. Participants at the forum advised APMA to build online coding content for residents that they can access in short increments that suit their busy schedules. They also suggested a “coding mentor” program for in-person events that would allow young physician attendees to interact with an experienced coder during the conference or meeting. …build online coding content for residents that they can access in short increments. The CRC offers a CPT to ICD-9 crosswalk; a document library containing billing guidelines and requirements; CCI use instructions; and Medicare fee schedules. Some new features that will be part of the CRC in 2012 include an ICD-10 tab to include references, discussions, and timelines, as well as a “Favorites” feature that will allow you and your staff to annotate your most common codes.
