t the 2011 APMA Annual Scientific Meeting (The National), APMA launched a new non-CME breakfast presentation designed to help members tackle tough practice-related issues throughout their podiatric medical careers. In 2012, the non-CME breakfast symposium is a true master’s course, featuring experts in marketing, finance, and advocacy and allowing participants to select one of those topics and spend a full 90 minutes immersed in that subject matter. Part I, Master Your Practice Marketing, features Bret Ribotsky, DPM, who is in solo practice and the host of the “Meet the Masters” radio broadcast, as well as a leading authority on podiatric practice marketing. Dr. Ribotsky said he will assimilate his own experience and the advice of everyone who has been a guest on “Meet the Masters,” giving his audience a “CliffsNotes version” of what it takes to be successful in marketing, including social media, e-mail, direct mail, video, and more. He will offer simple but creative ideas to uncover existing resources. For example, if you treat another physician, why not ask him or her to send a letter (you would cover the costs) to his or her patients recommending you for their foothealth needs? “One of the things dramatically missing in podiatric medical education is business skills,” Dr. Ribotsky said. He promised to deliver those skills, along with a hearty dose of entertainment, in this brand-new session. Dr. Ri- A Master Your Practice at The National botsky will also tell attendees how to get a free mobile Web page so potential patients can access practice information via smartphones and other mobile devices. In Part II, Russell M. LaGreca, CFP, CRPS, of The JK Meek Group at Graystone Consulting, will help you Master Your Finances. LaGreca is back by popular demand from last year’s breakfast, where he covered issues including grappling with medical school debt, planning for retirement, and understanding spending patterns after retirement. He advised young practitioners to live within a budget similar to their residency spending to pay down loans as quickly as possible. Established practitioners should be taking a close look at retirement needs as early as possible, he said, understanding how much they will ultimately need for retirement and working backward to establish monthly contributions. Podiatrists considering retirement, LaGreca said, should be prepared to spend more heavily immediately after retirement and slow spending as they become less active. Part III will show you how to Master Your Influence, introducing you to APMA’s legislative advocacy leaders and sharing strategies for maximizing your relationships with legislators and policymakers. The session will illustrate how members’ relationships with their legislators have advanced the profession in the past (for example, past relationships opened the door for podiatrists to be included in Medicare as physicians). Attendees will get grassroots advocacy advice and have an opportunity to practice their lobbying skills in a role-playing exercise. Don’t miss the opportunity to interact with the masters and leave The National motivated and excited about your practice. Plan to attend the Master Your Practice Breakfast Symposium, Sunday, August 19, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at The National in Washington, DC.
