Editor Peggy Tresky Assistant Editor Aimee R. Condayan Art Director/Production Manager Edith A. Caro Editor Emeritus David J. Zych © 2012, APMA APMA Newsbimonthly in July/ (ISSN 8750-2585) is published monthly, except President’s Message Texas-sized Tenacity “Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal. My strength lies solely in my tenacity.” —Louis Pasteur Several weeks ago, I stood before the APMA House of Delegates as the newly inaugurated president of this great organization. During my speech, I told the house that this organization will be absolutely tenacious—bold and relentless—in its pursuit of Vision 2015 and, in particular, our legislative goals. After our House of Delegates meeting closed, many of us participated in the annual Legislative Conference, storming Capitol Hill to make our message heard by our legislators. During that event, I saw firsthand what tenacious podiatrists can accomplish when we work together. We gained dozens of new cosponsors for our Title XIX legislation in the House and Senate because our members were determined to educate their lawmakers. You can read more about the Legislative Conference and its outcomes in this issue’s Federal Advocacy Forum on page 63. Not everyone can make it to Washington, DC. But every single member of this organization can and must take advantage of the convenient tools APMA makes available for you to communicate with legislators. Visit www.apma. org/eadvocacy today to send a message to your representatives. It takes literally minutes—your lawmakers are prepopulated, and messages are prewritten for you to use. I have asked the members of the house and the Board of Trustees to do the same, and I demand it of myself. There’s no excuse not to share the story of podiatric medicine with your legislators. If you can do more by visiting your legislators in person when they are in their home districts, by all means, please do so. Visit www.apma.org/podia tristvalue to find detailed information, including leave-behind materials, about the APMA-sponsored Thomson Reuters study, as well as the independent Duke University study, both of which articulate the value of care by a podiatrist. On that same page, you’ll find advice about sharing the studies with your legislators. Talk about the value of care by a podiatrist, and if you can, illustrate the importance of podiatric care by sharing a patient story or even bringing a patient with you. Legislators want to hear firsthand from the constituents who will suffer if podiatrists’ services aren’t adequately reimbursed under Medicaid. We have come so far as an organization and a profession since our founding 100 years ago, and we continue to advance podiatric medicine—and medicine in general—at lightning speed. In this issue, for example, read about two podiatric physicians who are playing important leadership roles on their medical staffs in Profiles in Progress (page 44). We must be tenacious in conveying this message of progress to our legislators, other health-care professionals, and patients. As you know, I am an adopted Texan, and as such, I believe we either go big or go home. Let’s go big this year, with unprecedented numbers of APMA members using our APMA advocacy tools and resources to profess our shared story to all who will listen. I am honored to serve as your president, and I thank you for your tenacity for this profession. —Joseph M.
