Profiles in Progress: Medicare Incentive Payments In the latest Medicare Incentive Program update1, CMS reports that podiatrists have received more than $44 million in CMS incentive payments for meaningful use. Only family practice, internal medicine, and cardiovascular specialists have received more incentives. APMA has been active in educating members about meaningful use and how to take advantage of incentives and also played a critical role in ensuring that podiatrists would be eligible to receive the incentive payments. APMA also has been tireless in advocating for its members as CMS has released its proposed rule for Stage 2 electronic health records and meaningful use. APMA, for example, worked closely with Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) who recently submitted comments to CMS sharing her concerns that “the Stage 2 goals may be too ambitious for some small or solo practice physicians to meet. I continue to be concerned about physicians in solo or small practices who do not have, and who simply cannot afford, health IT.” APMA member Denise Lea Elliott, DPM, testified on the issue before the US congressional subcommittee on Health Care and Technology last year, sharing her personal experience and concerns moving toward Stage 2.
