APMA by the Decade: 1982–1991 Throughout 2012, APMA’s publications will celebrate the rich heritage of the podiatric medical profession and its professional organization. Each month in APMA News, we will focus on one decade of APMA’s history. D uring the 1980s, APMA as we know it today began to take shape. In fact, in 1984, the name of the organization was officially changed to better reflect the common nomenclature of the day as the American Podiatry Association (APA) became the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). This change did not cause nearly as much controversy as the change from “chiropody” two decades earlier. Members advocated for the inclusion of “medical” to reinforce the notion of parity with allopathic physicians. This period also saw the launch of what would ultimately become this magazine. The APA Report began publication in November 1980 as a monthly newspaper to communicate matters of general interest to members. It combined the “What’s Happening” section of the APA Journal and the quarterly APA News Report. Subsequently, the APA Journal (later the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association) would limit its content to scientific articles. In 1983, the association established the Project 2000 Commission to evaluate the status of the profession and provide recommendations for future direction. The commission submitted its report in 1986 and laid out 19 recommendations that largely pertained to expanding the scope of practice, raising educational standards, improving the public’s understanding of proper foot health, and recognizing podiatrists as physicians. In November 1991, APMA pared the recommendations down to 13 key priorities for the organization moving forward. Chief among these priorities were molding health policy, increasing and promoting the marketing and image of podiatric medicine, strengthening APMA’s ties with other groups, and broadening APMA’s contributions to public health issues. Significant changes were afoot in podiatric medical education. The House of Delegates adopted CPME residency requirements that enabled CPME to approve specialty residency programs. The requirements also allowed CPME to establish a joint residency review process, involving both the orthopedic and surgical certifying boards. The new requirements set in motion the review process that continues to exist today. In 1987, APMA celebrated its 75th Anniversary. As part of the many accolades and festivities that year, President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation recognizing APMA’s long history and declared August 2–8 National Podiatric Medicine Week. The same year, the association moved to its current location from its former home at Chevy Chase Circle in Washington, DC. Now located in Bethesda, MD, less than a mile from the Capital Beltway, APMA took great pains in renovating the new headquarters building for modern use with the installation of word processors, printers, copiers, and the organization’s first fax machine (with its own dedicated phone line still in use by our Membership Department today). The future staff leadership of APMA made their debut in the 1980s. In March 1980, current Deputy Executive Director Jay Levrio, PhD, began his tenure with the association as assistant director of CPME. A few years later in August 1986, current Executive Director Glenn Gastwirth, DPM, started at APMA as director of Scientific Affairs. Today’s health policy priorities also began to take shape in the 1980s. Throughout the decade, APMA advocacy efforts were targeted at Medicare physician fees. The association also advocated for scope of practice and many other modern-day issues.
