Editor Peggy Tresky Assistant Editor Aimee R. Condayan Contributing Editor Will Scott Art Director/Production Manager Edith A. Caro Editor Emeritus David J. Zych © 2012, APMA APMA Newsbimonthly in July/ (ISSN 8750-2585) is published monthly, except President’s Message Get Out and Vote! Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves, and the only way they could do this is by not voting. —Franklin Delano Roosevelt Voting is one of our greatest rights and responsibilities as American citizens. As APMA members, our votes can make a real difference for our profession, our patients, and the entire health-care community. In this month’s Federal Advocacy Forum, Legislative Committee Chair Seth Rubenstein, DPM, explains the importance of this year’s election for physicians everywhere. The outcomes of the presidential election and congressional battles nationwide could have a very real impact for those of us in health care. Read more from Dr. Rubenstein on page 44. APMA is actively working for you, its members, to ensure that we elect legislators who will be supportive of our profession, and to educate lawmakers about the issues most important to podiatric medicine. In August and September, APMA had a strong presence at both the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention. Your association sponsored a townhall meeting, The Health-Care Town Hall Meeting: Innovative Ideas for a Healthy America, at both conventions. The meeting brought together key figures from each party to discuss how our nation can improve its health-care system. We also featured prominent advertising in CQ Weekly’s convention issues, which were distributed to attendees at the conventions. We attended briefings and fundraisers and had the opportunity to make personal contact with many of our most prominent legislators from both sides of the aisle. Every member must make an effort to amplify the voice of the profession. During this busy time, one of the simplest and best ways to break through the clutter of messages targeting our legislators is a good, old-fashioned phone call. Our Legislative Advocacy Department is encouraging every member to make a call about key issues. Some of our colleagues have the opportunity this year to cast a vote for a fellow podiatrist. If you are voting in Ohio’s second congressional district, consider voting for Brad Wenstrup, DPM, and if you are voting in California’s 25th district, consider casting your ballot for Lee Rogers, DPM. Both are running for election to the US House of Representatives. APMA members everywhere have an opportunity to support federal candidates who have helped our profession. A donation to APMAPAC helps strengthen our message on Capitol Hill by providing funds for candidates who support podiatric medicine. The APMA Government Education Fund also helps educate new legislators. There has never been a more important time to give to the PAC. Visit www.apma.org/donate to make your contribution quickly, conveniently, and securely online. If you don’t have time to call your legislators, please take a few minutes to visit www.apma.org/eadvocacy to send a message to your elected officials about both state and federal issues important to you. It takes literally minutes, and there’s no excuse not to make use of this incredibly convenient tool. This November, make your voice heard. Get out to vote on Election Day, and take advantage of the many tools APMA provides to advance the issues most important to you as a physician. If every APMA member makes it his or her responsibility to get the word out, we will succeed. —Joseph M. Caporusso, DPM, President 6 APMA News October 2012 http://www.apma.org/donate http://www.apma.org/eadvocacy
