CPME Update Fall Meeting The agenda for the October 17–20, 2012, meeting of the Council on Podiatric Medical Education included consideration of continuing or new approval status of 92 residencies and eight continuing podiatric medical education sponsors. Recommendations from council committees, which completed their deliberations through meetings and conference calls held in September and early October, constituted the majority of the CPME agenda. The Continuing Education and Residency Review Committees (RRC) held their meetings in September. The Accreditation Committee and the council’s Budget Planning and Executive Committees met in October. The council considered the August 2012 report of the team that conducted an on-site evaluation of Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine. The council elected to extend initial accreditation of the college through October 2016. The council also considered the June 2012 report of the team that conducted an on-site evaluation of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine and elected to extend accreditation of the college through October 2020. The council also considered progress reports from two colleges. Residency actions taken at the September RRC and October CPME meeting included (see pages 12–15 in CPME 330, Procedures for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies, at www.cpme.org for definitions of the following categories of approval): Approval—77 Probationary Approval—10 Withdraw Approval—0 Progress report considered, no change to approval status, additional information requested—39 Progress report considered, no change to approval status/no additional information requested—30 Other matters discussed included continuation of the moratorium on applications for new colleges of podiatric medicine and increased enrollment at accredited colleges; revisions to the council’s bylaws; and adoption of a wide range of policies related to residency programs. CPME Officers and Elections At its October meeting, Timothy Ford, DPM, and Oleg Petrov, DPM, were installed for their second one-year terms as council chair and vice-chair, respectively. Lori DeBlasi, DPM; Charles Lombardi, DPM; and Michael Trepal, DPM, were re-elected as at-large council members. Invitation for Comments about Approved Residencies The council’s residency approval process includes consideration of third-party comments. The list below identifies all site visits scheduled for the spring of 2013. Third-party comments must address substantive matters relating to the quality of the program and the CPME standards and requirements and should be addressed to the director of the council at: CPME, 9312 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD 20814 or by e-mail to artinkleman@apma.org. Comments must be received 30 days prior to the program’s scheduled site visit date. (An updated list that includes the date of each visit is maintained on CPME.org. All third-party comments must be signed.) Comments will be forwarded to the evaluation team and to the program director for response, if appropriate, during the evaluation visit process. • • • • • In keeping with its obligation as an accrediting body to inform its community of interest of proposed changes to accreditation and approval standards, procedures, and policies, the council has proposed revisions to CPME 720, Standards and Requirements for Approval of Sponsors of Continuing Education in Podiatric Medicine, and CPME 730, Procedures for Approval of Sponsors of Continuing Education in Podiatric Medicine. The council will consider final adoption of the proposed revisions at its April 2013 meeting, following review of comments from the community of interest. Following review of comments from the community of interest, the council adopted final revisions to CPME 220, Criteria and Guidelines for Recognition of a Specialty Board for Podiatric Medical Practice, and CPME 230, Procedures for Recognition of a Specialty Board for Podiatric Medical Practice, effective January 1, 2013.
