American Society of Podiatric Dermatology Presents Worthy of Note Introducing the ADA/APMA Fellow This year’s chosen fellow for the two-year American Diabetes Association/APMA Fellowship is Janelle Green, DPM. Dr. Green will work with mentor Susan Enguidanos, PhD, MPH. This fellowship takes place September 1, 2012, through August 31, 2014, and aims to identify self-care and diabetes knowledge needs of Latinos with diabetes transitioning from hospital to home. By understanding gaps in both diabetes education and self-management skills, podiatrists can better develop programs and services to provide education, training, and support to meet these needs. Fungus Link Confirmed in Fungal Meningitis Outbreak The CDC and FDA advised providers in October to discontinue use of any products produced at New England Compounding Center (NECC) due to a fungal meningitis outbreak related to contaminated methylprednisolone acetate (80 mg/ml) epidural injections. On October 18, the CDC and FDA said they had confirmed the presence of the fungus in unopened vials of preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate from the NECC. As of press time, there have been 409 reported cases of fungal meningitis, 30 related deaths, and 10 peripheral joint infections. The CDC and FDA recommend that health-care professionals cease use of any product produced at NECC. See the complete list of all products subject to this recall at FDA.gov. The FDA advises health-care professionals and patients to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of these products to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.
