For about an hour, EMTs, students, medical specialists, and residents worked together steadfastly to keep victims stable until ambulances arrived to transport them to local hospitals. After tending to his last patient, Dr. Lew began to worry about his mother, who had been due to cross the finish line at about the time the bombs exploded. His father and sister had been 50 yards from the finish line, as well. He hadn’t seen them come through the medical tent, so he kept faith they were okay. Meanwhile, he and other volunteers wondered what more they could do to help. Eventually, Dr. Lew made contact with his family, and everyone was unharmed. “Perhaps the best way that we can honor the victims and their families is to bring our very best to every patient we treat,” said Dr. Lew. “It is truly a privilege to be a part of this great profession. We have an incredible opportunity to continue to demonstrate that we are a vital and necessary force within the greater medical community.” Dr. Aronson said that after all the victims had been treated and transported to hospitals, most medical volunteers stood near the rear of the tent, which was in front of the Copley Plaza Hotel, awaiting further instruction. “In past years, it was usually a casual farewell. This year was different. There were hugs and tears, and I heard people saying to others without hesitation, ‘See you next year!’” n The first patient Temple student Malan saw was a badly bleeding woman in her 60s. She was crying and worried because she didn’t know where her granddaughter was. Malan said the advice of his traumatology professor, Jason Piraino, DPM, came back to him, and he began checking the victim to ensure she did not have a spinal injury. the tent. Dr. Kaplan brought plenty of supplies, so we had everything right there and [were] ready to roll when the first victims were brought in.” Amid all the chaos, Dr. Lew also said he believes the Boston Athletic Association medical team leaders did a fantastic job keeping everyone calm, on task, and organized. Requests for assignments should include a list of specific committees and a list of general areas of interest and expertise.
