Report from the APMAPAC Chair By Barney A. Greenberg, DPM Team APMAPAC=Commitment + Meaningful Donation + Political Action HELLPP—the Helping Ensure Life- and Limb-saving Acccess to Podiatric Physicians Act—is our profession’s newly introduced, revised legislation in Congress. It recognizes doctors of podiatric medicine as physicians under Medicaid (Title XIX) and clariﬁes the role of the prescribing physician under Medicare’s Therapeutic Shoe Program for patients with diabetes. “HELLPP” is also what I am asking for from each and every member of APMA. Become a Member of Team APMAPAC In order to achieve our legislative goals, we need to become a well-oiled machine. “No” is not an acceptable answer! There is no better time than right now to give back to the profession that provides so much for you and your family. How do you do that? 40th Anniversar y ■ MAKE A COMMITMENT. We are a small profession, but we have made tremendous legislative advances. The key to continued success is total commitment from every member of the profession. Commit to give just ﬁve minutes of your time every week to political action, and then add a note to your calendar so you’ll be sure to follow through. ■ MAKE A MEANINGFUL DONATION TO APMAPAC. This spring, I attended the Midwest Podiatry Conference, where I made an appeal to the assembled crowd to give to APMAPAC. A notable contribution resulting from my speech was from a resident who stood up and pledged $4.99. I asked why, as a resident with little expendable income and huge sums of student loan debt, he would even consider giving. He responded simply that he knew it was the honorable thing to do, but he couldn’t afford to give more, so he gave the balance left on a Visa gift card. “Meaningful” is deﬁned by you, and all contribution amounts are appreciated. ■ BE POLITICALLY ACTIVE. Start by going to www.apma. org/eadvocacy, then: 1. make a meaningful donation and get your podiatric colleagues to give also; 2. write to your members of Congress in support of our legislative agenda; 3. call your US representative and senators and ask them to cosponsor HELLPP; 4. go to fundraisers for federal candidates running in your district; 5. get to know your US representative and senators, as well as their staff; and 6. educate your elected ofﬁcials about our needs as a profession. To paraphrase John F Kennedy, “Ask not what your profes. sion has done for you.
