President’s Message
Start at the State
I had the distinct pleasure in April of participating in the APMA State Advocacy Forum in Detroit. We held the event in Michigan this year in recognition
of the outstanding work that state component has done in an effort to achieve
local goals as well as to support our national efforts to achieve Vision 2015.
Our state components truly are critical to the success of our national organization and our profession overall. Many of the goals of Vision 2015, including recognition of podiatrists as physicians, can only be achieved with
the grassroots support of the states. We’ve seen in our State Component SelfAssessment survey that some states have had more success than others
achieving that grassroots momentum among their members.
I’m here to tell you that until every APMA member makes a commitment
to his or her state component society, to APMA, and to the profession of podiatric medicine, we won’t fully achieve our goals. Complaining about our
problems does nothing to solve them. Instead of opining about perceived
failures, get involved and change the profession for the better.
Michigan has had such tremendous success because every member is involved. Every member, for example, has at least one connection with a legislator, and the state component uses those connections to build relationships.
Participate in the work of your state component society. Serve on committees
and share any connections you may have with legislators, members of the
state medical or osteopathic association, state boards, payer medical directors, and other stakeholders. Make casual connections to those individuals
count by turning them into solid relationships.
Our colleagues in Michigan also understand that relationship-building requires long-term commitment, mutual trust and respect, and significant effort.
You may have a connection with a legislator, for example, who doesn’t vote in
favor of podiatrists on every single issue. But if you expend the time and energy
to educate that legislator about podiatric medicine and inform his or her staff of
the issues that are important to you as a constituent, you may get the one critical vote you really need. Focus on long-term outcomes and don’t expect immediate success. Be persistent in your efforts, and you will see results. As author and educator Christian D. Larson said, “Believe in yourself and all that you
are. Know that there is something inside you greater than any obstacle.”
You can read more about the State Advocacy Forum on page 18. Also, find
out how one podiatrist’s long-term relationship with a very high-profile patient paid dividends for the profession and one of our schools on page 14.
Read the compelling story of our colleagues who were on the scene as first
responders during the Boston Marathon bombings on page 10—it will make
you very proud to be a podiatrist.
Thank you to all of you who participated in this year’s State Advocacy
Forum, and in particular to our committed colleagues in Michigan. I encourage every APMA member to follow their lead and make a difference in your
state and for the profession as a whole!
