The Benefits of Working with Residents P BY CLINT LARSEN, DPM Faculty, Intermountain Medical Center, Salt Lake City articipating in the training of residents can be one of the most rewarding experiences of our professional lives. It is hard to top the satisfaction of watching a resident’s progression of clinical knowledge, surgical skills, and decision making. There are very real challenges with training that have left some attendings questioning whether it is worth their time and effort. Because there is no real guide book on navigating the effort. Because there is no real guide book on navigating the process, I would like to offer some tips that have helped me. Defining clear expectations with your residents is essential. Most residents would jump through a burning hoop if you asked, but they are often reluctant to “do too much” in fear that they will be getting in your way. Each resident should know your preferences in the OR and should be encouraged to make sure everything is ready. This step alone has decreased OR times at our hospitals in which residents participate. I have found that it helps to inform the resident before the case at what level they will be participating. If a resident enters the OR knowing that he or she will be doing the dissection or performing the reduction, he or she will be more inclined to mentally stay with you throughout the case. If you don’t feel comfortable turning over the blade, take advantage of the time to teach as you work. The residents are great disseminators of knowledge. Such amendments should be submitted in the form of a proposition following the same process used to propose a modification to the APMA Bylaws. APMA’s Bylaws and Procedures Committee will review the submissions and present them to the regular meeting of the House of Delegates, March 16–17, 2014, in Washington, DC. Plus, there have been times when I have benefited from their ideas and suggestions. There is a real fear in the community about training your future competition. I have found that residents with whom you have built a relationship are far more likely to refer second opinions and challenging cases. The relationships you forge in the OR can bring a community of practitioners together and can lead to greater success for podiatric medicine in that community. Working with residents in your clinic can be a positive experience as well. The majority of patients like to see their doctor in a teaching capacity. You can underscore your assessment and plan for the patient by explaining them to the resident. The patients may also feel like they have had two opinions when being worked up by a resident and enjoying good face time with the attending. Getting to know the residents also has been very rewarding for me. These are some of the most fascinating people I encounter. For the most part, they are dedicated and driven. They have traveled and have a vast background of life experience. Many of the new things that I try in my personal life come at the recommendation of a resident. The most rewarding aspect of working with residents is seeing how much they grow. Every July, I am reminded how much the incoming residents have to learn. Watching the year’s long conversion of knowledge to wisdom is a good reminder that we can all continue to learn and make ourselves better practitioners, teachers, and people. n
