Letter to the Editor: Harold J. Feder, DPM, In Memoriam
Dear Editor,
My father, Dr. Harold J. Feder, 93, a prominent Chicago
podiatrist for more than 60 years, died July 29 in Lincolnwood, IL. A 1944 graduate of what is now the Dr. William
M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, he served in the
US Army Medical Corps in World War II. Dr. Feder was a
leader in his profession, the Jewish community, and Niles
Township government. He inspired two of his four sons to
become podiatrists: My brother Joel A. Feder, DPM, and I
practiced alongside him for many years.
A recipient of APMA's Distinguished Service Citation,
Dr. Feder served as a mentor to countless students and
colleagues. He was instrumental in opening hospitals to
podiatry and was double board-certified, leading both the
American College of Foot & Ankle Orthopedics & Medicine and the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and
Primary Podiatric Medicine
(now the American Board
of Podiatric Medicine). He
endowed the Feder Scholarship Award at Scholl College and donated an orthopedics classroom there. He
helped facilitate the merger
of Scholl College with Rosalind Franklin University
of Health Sciences in 2001.
Just weeks before his

passing, Dr. Feder celebrated
75 years of marriage to his wife, Selma. In addition to his wife
and four sons, he is survived by eight grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.

OHFAMA Spearheads WV Flood Victim Drive; APMA Pitches In
The catastrophic flooding in late June in West Virginia
left thousands of children without clothing and school
supplies. The Ohio Foot and Ankle Medical Association
(OHFAMA) accepted donations for new socks for West
Virginia K-12 students for back to school.
OHFAMA received $225 for socks for school children
affected by the June flooding. APMA donated new socks,
shoes, and boots to assist with the project. OHFAMA
members were generous in helping the children who lost
so much in the flood.
OHFAMA Executive Director Jimelle Rumberg, PhD,
CAE, said many flood victims are still living in tents. "It's
heart-wrenching that so many people lost everything they
owned. I'm hopeful that these shoes and socks will help
them. I am grateful that so many stepped up to assist. It
was truly above and beyond."
