Atlantic City Visitors Guide 2007 - (Page 88) Atlantic Ocean, back bays, wetlands, pinelands – they’re all part of our beautiful surroundings. In fact, Mother Nature is one of South Jersey’s biggest stars, and fans come from around the world to applaud her. That makes the area a natural for outdoor pursuits. Expansive wildlife refuges provide a rest for an array of waterfowl and other birds on their annual migrations, bringing flocks of nature lovers each year to view the spectacle. You’ll also thrill to your first sighting of dolphins or whales on one of the area’s ocean cruises. A rehabilitation center for stranded or ill sea mammals offers another perspective. Celebrate nature’s beauty with a stroll through professionally landscaped gardens or area parks – the pinelands provide a rare ecosystem rich with native flora and fauna. If you’re more of a doer than a viewer, you can take a bike ride along the Atlantic City Boardwalk in the early morning hours, or hike one of the many trails in area parks. Paddling a canoe or kayak is a great way to see the local rivers, and the Atlantic Ocean provides the playground for surfing, canoeing and kayaking as well. Don’t forget the suntan lotion.
